Description
Words from the artist:
“In Myanmar culture, there is a longstanding belief that a woman’s longyi (a tube-shaped sarong worn by women, also called a htamein) can taint or bring bad luck to a man’s aura, or Bhone, if he walks under it. Traditionally, men are believed to possess a higher spiritual power or Bhone than women.
During the ongoing revolution in Myanmar, women have turned this belief into an act of resistance.
Women began tying their longyis to sticks, rods, and pipes, raising them like flags in protest against patriarchy and dictatorship. Activists have also hung women’s longyis across streets, knowing that soldiers may be reluctant to walk beneath them.
What was once used to diminish women has become a powerful symbol of defiance.”
